Chapter Seventeen

Blade threw open the door to Selene’s waiting room to find his client crouching on the ground in the middle of the patterned carpet. Bits of the window near where she’d been sitting lay shattered on the floor.

“Are you hit?” he asked.

Wild-eyed, she shook her head.

“No, but the window exploded.”

Blade moved beside the broken window and peeked out. No one was outside.

Time to go.

He bent down and scooped Selene into his arms. She whooped with surprise but didn’t object. In the hallway, people were running in a panic.

He didn’t want to weave her through the throngs of people—too much chaos, and he wouldn’t be able to track everything around him.

He didn’t want to stay where they were because whoever shot at the window might have been targeting her.

They might be on their way to finish the job.

To Blade’s left stood a third option—a second door.

He tried the knob and, finding it locked, took a step back.

“Hold on,” he said, gripping Selene to him.

He splintered the lock with a kick of his size-thirteen boot. The door led to a room much like the first. That room opened to a different section of the hotel—a hallway inaccessible by the panicking seminar crowd in the hallway.

With Selene draped in his forearms and her arms around his neck, he made his way to the nearest stairwell and carried her to the third floor, which he randomly selected based on the fact he didn’t think he could carry her up another flight of stairs.

Compared to most humans, she was light and small but…stairs.

The hallway on the third floor was empty. He picked a room.

“Knock,” he said. His hands were full of Selene.

“I can walk now,” she said.

“Just knock.”

She knocked.

No one answered.

“Hold on again,” he said, stepping back. He kicked open the door and took her inside. Only then did he lower her to her feet near the bed.

He took a moment to steady her and then pushed a bureau in front of the door. She watched him in silence. He worried she was in shock.

“Get in the bathroom,” he said to her.

She looked at him with wide eyes and then did as told.

Blade called Declan.

“Someone took a shot at her,” he reported when the boss answered.

“What? Are you okay?”

“I’ve got her on the third floor in a room. There’s a lot of chaos going on downstairs. Figured up here, she’s away from it all.”

“Do you want me there?”

Blade considered this and decided it was unnecessary.

“No. I’ll call downstairs and tell them to let me know when the police show, but could you call Frank and get him to get word to the local cops here? I want to be sure they know I didn’t kidnap her when they get here.”

“Why would they think that?” asked Declan.

“I dunno. Better safe than sorry. I carried her up here and kicked open a door. Who knows who saw what and how they’re interpreting it? I don’t want some shoot-now-ask-questions-later security guard getting his story mixed up.”

“How’s Selene?”

Blade glanced at the bathroom.
